Updating Your Resume

If you've been contemplating a major new job, just know that you're not alone. In fact, many people are unhappy with their jobs and want to make a significant change. For some, this might mean a return to school. For others, a career transition could be as easy as sending out their resume.

While stressful and challenging, the choice to search for a new career path can be one of the most exciting and rewarding decisions you can make in your life. After all, you can look forward to a whole new world of possibilities, like doing the work you've always dreamed of doing, fulfilling a personal life vision, increasing your income, and maybe even benefiting others as well. This could be your chance to return to school and get an advanced degree, or launch a new business, or move into that exciting new career field that's always fascinated you.

While one-page resumes are generally recommended, if you've an extensive work background, it might be advisable to go with a longer resume. If you fit in that category, I would suggest a resume no more than 2 pages in length. You may find yourself in an industry that requires an extensive list of your work background, so you'll find yourself detailing every service, product and technology you've intimate knowledge of, or have worked with in the past.

You never want to boast or brag on your resume. Always be truthful and list your objectives, skills, professional experience, education, and knowledge. Another option if you don't have the time or skills require to produce a great resume is to hire the services of a professional resume writer.

Many experts claim that a single page is the best resume, but in my years of experience a single page just doesn't provide enough information for those with extensive backgrounds. If you fit in that category, I would suggest a resume no more than 2 pages in length. If it's important to your profession to list extensive details within your particular industry, then you would be advised to mention each and every product, service, and technology which you have worked with, or have a deep knowledge of.

Writing a resume is actually a process of selling yourself to a prospective employer. The loss of a job can have a negative effect on our self image. You need to brush any negative thoughts aside and focus instead on your many accomplishments. When you're unemployed, your challenge is to learn how to sell yourself.

Finally, start working toward realizing your new career goals even if you feel a little uncertain. Clarity and new opportunities will unfold when you take decisive action toward your new career goals. So aim high, keep your goals always in front of you, and take decisive action in the direction of the successful new career you’ve been dreaming of.

Many times we're forced into career choices that don't allow us the luxury of considering all of our options carefully. Is the course of your career at a branch in the road? It's wise to never make a major career move without first considering all the options and ramifications. A sound decision almost always takes into account your career, your family, and your life as a whole.
